Cooperation agreement links nature enhancement with wind energy in the North Sea

31/01/2020

Tennet, Eneco, Van Oord, Blauwwind, Ørsted, Natuur & Milieu and Stichting De Noordzee sign cooperation agreement: The Rich North Sea

On January 30th Tennet, Eneco, Van Oord, Blauwwind, Ørsted, Natuur & Milieu en Stichting De Noordzee signed the Cooperation Agreement: The Rich North Sea. These parties, who all have important ties with the North Sea, share a common goal under this agreement: a healthy North Sea, source of sustainable energy, rich in nature and full of life. This goal includes making use of offshore wind farms as nurseries for the underwater nature.

The parties support the Programme and make contributions to its implementation. Such support may include undertaking of Nature Enhancement projects, installing artificial reefs, providing shipping time, performing or enabling scientific research. The Rich North Sea programme connects two major challenges: providing sustainable energy and strengthening life under water.

"A strong collaboration between the wind sector and nature organizations. Innovation on the seabed in wind farms with the ultimate goal of a healthy North Sea."

Erwin Coolen Director of The Rich North Sea

The Rich North Sea: where wind and nature reinforce each other
The Rich North Sea programme is the first to strengthen underwater nature in wind farms in the North Sea on a large scale. Natural reefs have virtually disappeared there due to human intervention and diseases. But fishing is not allowed on the bottom of the wind farms in the North Sea. By developing new living reefs right there, places are created for shellfish to attach to. This creates nature that can give nature in the North Sea a "kickstart". The Rich North Sea will implement nature projects in existing and yet to be built wind farms in the coming years, for example with flat oysters, cold-water coral, blue mussels and sandpit worms.
