The Rich North Sea

The Rich North Sea starts with Offshore Test Site

06/05/2020

The "Offshore Test Site" of The Rich North Sea consists of various test locations where we try-out our work for wind farms on a small scale. This gives us good insights into what works best at sea and we will soon reap the benefits of this when we start working directly in wind farms in the North Sea.

North Sea Farmers
The first of the series "Offshore Test Site" is a plot (of 1 km2) in the "North Sea Innovation Lab" of the North Sea Farmers. This lot is located 30 minutes by boat from the coast of Scheveningen. Here we are testing constructions that we eventually want to place in the wind farms. Conditions at the bottom of the North Sea are challenging and it is important that we know in advance whether the structures can withstand these tough conditions at the bottom of the North Sea. Additionally, we include the effects on biodiversity in the studies.

Research conducted close to the coast is easier because we can reach the Offshore Test Site of the North Sea Farmers quickly and with small ships. Monitoring can also be done with smaller boats and it is possible for divers to visit locations. In wind farms, ship requirements are strict and diving is not allowed, making expeditions there costly.
