On the 19th of January, the Rich North Sea and ReVIFES organized the fifth webinar on nature development in the North Sea. Subject of the webinar was the duty of decommissioning.
The aim of this webinar was to start a discussion on the duty of decommissioning by looking at the topic from three perspectives: the ecological, legal, and economic side. For each of the side, different speakers participated in the webinar: Chris Backes, Professor at Utrecht University, Centre for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law en Alex Oude Elferink, Director of the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea, told us all about the legal side. Joop Coolen, benthic ecologist, specialized in the ecology of natural reefs, coastal defenses, shipwrecks, and offshore installations dived into the ecological side and Matthew Geraghty, founder, and ReWind venture lead at DNV helped us to better understand the economic side of decommissioning.
